If ever there was a car designed for motoring journalists it was the Toyota GT86, universally lauded for its low cost, low grip, high performance and high-fun promise when launched in 2012. This rear-wheel drive, 2+2 seat coupe retailed for under £25,000 and was built as a joint venture with Subaru – it even used a Subaru ‘boxer’ four-cylinder petrol engine.
Running on tyres originally developed for the eco-efficient Toyota Prius the GT86 was meant to be about low-speed fun, full of sensation through the controls, and for the keen and talented driver at least, some low risk slides. But with 197bhp the GT86 could sprint from 0-62mph in just 7.4 seconds, with a top speed totalling 140mph.
