Toyota Prius Plug In motors and batteries

There’s just one engine option in the Prius Plug In – but it’s a good one. Power comes from a 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motor combination delivering a punchy 223hp. That’s 100hp more than before, and it feels every bit of it.

Toyota quotes a 0–62mph time of 6.8 seconds, properly quick for a plug-in hybrid like this. The power delivery is smooth and linear, with no sudden surges. It feels more mature than most rivals, even if it’s not overtly sporty. It’ll surprise other drivers away from the lights, especially those in the rival Volkswagen Golf or Peugeot 308.

Toyota Prius long term test
The performance of the Prius is surprisingly brisk.

A 13.6kWh battery gives it up to 53 miles of electric range on the WLTP cycle. Charging takes around four hours from a standard home wallbox, but there’s no DC fast charging available – a missed opportunity.

What’s it like to drive?

  • Smooth, refined ride
  • Light, precise steering
  • Excellent, smooth brakes

The overriding impression behind the wheel is refinement. Even under heavy acceleration, the petrol engine and electric motor work together seamlessly without a shout or jolt. You get steady, quiet progress rather than jerky surges, which makes it easy to glide through town with minimal fuss – or dig in on the motorway without worrying about noise.

Steering is light at low speeds and remains precise when you’re moving faster. It isn’t weighty like a sporty hatch, but it’s accurate and quick to respond, allowing confident lane changes and cornering. The result is a car that feels composed on B‑roads yet undemanding in urban traffic – a big plus if your daily drive combines both.

The ride is firm without being harsh – firm enough to keep body roll in check, but with enough damping to soften potholes and rough patches. On 19‑inch wheels, mid‑corner bumps might thump through, but they won’t upset your line. Unless you drive on severely broken roads every day, it’s comfortable and capable for everyday use.

The brakes deliver crisp, easy stops, with seamless regen braking blending into the system to slow the car gently in traffic. There’s no abrupt grab, and it doesn’t require constant pedal adjustment. That makes city driving less tiring and gives you more confidence on A‑roads or during quick manoeuvres at speed.

In everyday use the Prius Plug In feels intelligent and forgiving. It’s not a driver’s car in the traditional sense, but it rewards smooth driving with instant efficiency and steady handling. Whether you’re commuting, school‑run shuffling or weekend touring, it’s a car that puts driver comfort and usability first – without feeling dull or lifeless.
