Sharan shares some of its engines with Ford Galaxy and SEAT Alhambra. There are the same two turbo-diesels, the 1.9 TDi in 90bhp (1.9 TDi 90) and 110bhp (1.9 TDi 110) form. These are favoured – particularly the newer TDi 110 – because they give decent performance combined with nearly 40mpg cruising consumption if driven with consideration. Petrol power comes from the old 2.0, the newer 1.8T 20-valve and the smooth and lively 2.8 VR6.

Sharan impresses many drivers for being so car-like to drive. The steering is precise, gearchanges are smooth and the pedals are well positioned. Precise cornering and limited bodyroll adds to the attraction. The ride is supple over nearly all surfaces; it’s only firm on Sport models. It’s well controlled at all speeds.
