Overview

The ultimate incarnation of the Audi A3 might not have the biggest engine or access to hi-tech transmissions, but it is comfortably the quickest version on sale. The original Audi S3 had a strong following in the UK and this model should keep fans happy. The four-cylinder turbocharged engine, slick-shifting six-speed gearbox and quattro four-wheel drive ensure swift, efficient progress, but the whole package seems to lack the emotional appeal present in some rivals, and the firm ride is almost unbearable on rough and bumpy roads.

It was originally available as a three-door only, but a five-door Sportback version was introduced in 2008 when the model was also facelifted with sharper looks and an upgraded quattro system.
