Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 20 - 38 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Fuel economy compares well with rivals like the BMW 3-Series while the diesel model is great if you plan on covering lots of miles. Servicing is expensive, especially at Audi dealers so it’s worth finding a decent specialist – there are plenty around. Parts prices can be high so a recently serviced car is ideal while the range-topping S4 isn’t cheap in terms of fuel, insurance or tyres.

The A4 Cabriolet scores fairly badly on the eco front. With an average of 235g/km CO2 across the model line-up, its emissions are a little high for a medium-sized cabriolet and the range is not very frugal, averaging 30mpg.

Build quality is excellent, but there have been occasional niggles reported and roof problems aren’t unheard of. The A4 is unlikely to break down, but it’s a sophisticated and complex car so don’t neglect servicing.
