Verdict

The Audi A6 e-Hybrid is a good plug-in hybrid that has been improved significantly by its larger battery and longer electric driving range, in turn offering more potential for lower running costs. It drives well and looks smart too, though is let down by its small boot. If that’s a priority, we’d recommend looking at a regular A6 Saloon or A6 Avant instead. Or if you want a plug-in hybrid executive car that has a decent boot, the BMW 5 Series is where we’d put our money.

What we like

We like the e-Hybrid powertrain. It’s smooth, refined and noticeably more powerful than the regular petrol and diesel variants of the A6. Its much-improved electric driving range also means it can compete directly with rivals such as the Mercedes E-Class. Standard four-wheel steering is a real bonus, too, and makes it considerably easier to drive than its exterior dimensions would suggest.

What we don’t like

The boot space of the plug-in hybrid is a lot smaller than the standard A6’s, and it’s disappointingly shallow on the saloon especially. Watch out for the firm suspension on S line and Edition 1 variants, as it means it doesn’t ride anywhere near as well as we’d expect from an executive car like this. We also don’t think Audi’s new-generation interiors are an improvement in terms of quality or usability compared to the previous models.
