Audi A6: Executive comfort

The Audi A6

I've always been a fan of large saloons. They may not necessarily be the most practical choice for many, or indeed the most sporty, but there's something very relaxing about a big four-door car that can waft along the motorway.

Which is why I've chosen an Audi A6. Our newcomer isn't actually new - it's a 56-plate 2.0 TDI S line that's already covered almost 25,000 miles. From the showroom this model would have cost more than £28,000 - and that's without any extras. Unusually our car has NO options fitted to it.

In two years it has lost around 40% of its value, making it an affordable choice for anyone after an executive saloon. It should be economical too - the 2.0 TDI is the most efficient engine in the line-up and is capable of averaging 46mpg.

Sporty yet sensible

But just because it isn't one of the more powerful engines, that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice looks or handling. The S line trim is designed to be more driver focussed so comes with sports suspension, a lower ride height and uprated brakes.

It also gets sports seats in the front, a three-spoke leather sports steering wheel, black headlining, part-leather seats and distinctive 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. It's also got the same twin exhaust pipes as the more powerful models.

So although it may not actually be that quick - it does look it. If only the 2.0 TDI badge on the bootlid didn't give it away!
