Audi Q5 boot space, practicality and safety

2024 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 4 out of 54.0

Written by Jake Groves and Ted Welford Updated: 20 May 2025

  • Good rear space for adults
  • Boot a little smaller than old one
  • Decent storage options inside, though some are optional

How much space is there?

The new Audi Q5 offers a perfectly reasonable amount of space inside for passengers, and includes a good amount of space for those in the back. Adults can sit behind adults, with decent legroom that can be adjusted by the ability to slide the rear seat bench forward or back.

As part of the storage and luggage pack (fitted on all but the entry-level Sport) trim, you get individually folding rear seats that usefully lets you vary between having more boot or passenger space.

Rear legroom is good in the Q5 but not class-leading.

Headroom is good for adults, too, even for the person sat in the middle rear seat. It does feel a little gloomy for rear passengers if you don’t specify the £1,600 sunroof, though – particularly if your car has a dark coloured interior.

A little more rear legroom would be welcome, as the Q5 doesn’t feel significantly more spacious than the smaller Audi Q3. Two easily-accessible Isofix sockets are perfectly placed in the rear seats for fitting child seats, with wide-opening doors making it ideal for those with younger children.

Audi Q5 boot space and storage

The Audi Q5 SUV has a boot space of 520 litres measured from the boot floor to the parcel shelf. It’s a good size with a wide enough opening, but it’s actually smaller than the outgoing Q5 (by about 30 litres), owing to the fitment of its new mild-hybrid system. It’s also smaller than the latest-generation BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC – the Q5’s closest competition. Naturally, this SUV version offers more space when you take the parcel shelf out than the Q5 Sportback model with its much more sloping roofline.

Handily, Audi has included a space to easily stow the parcel shelf beneath the boot floor, and there’s a very small load lip which will make loading bulky items into the space that little bit easier.

Though the Q5’s boot is slightly smaller than the previous car, it’s still a useful space.

Cubbies and storage areas inside are generally of a good standard. The centre console between driver and front passenger has a small amount of space in, while two cupholders and a shelf for your phone are further forward. The door pockets are large front and rear, too – handy for big bottles.

Is it easy to park?

All Q5 models have 360-degree parking assistance, which includes all-round parking cameras and sensors. The technology on board also includes Audi’s Park Assist Plus technology that can automate some parking manoeuvres for you.

If you prefer to use the windows and mirrors to park, the Q5 offers good visibility for what is a mid-sized SUV, especially in the rear three-quarter area.

Safety

  • Latest Q5 not tested yet
  • Will likely secure five-star rating
  • Plenty of standard safety kit

Audi’s latest Q5 model hasn’t yet been tested by Euro NCAP, but that will likely change soon. We expect it to score well, likely clocking a five-star verdict given the amount of safety equipment that’s standard. As well as complying with all safety regulations, Audi has included a range of assists designed to make driving easier – and give it a better chance of scoring well.

Adaptive cruise control, high beam assist and front and rear cross-traffic alert are all fitted – the latter feature helping if you’re driving or reversing out of a drive or parking space with obstructed visibility.
