The excellent 1.8T unit has been widley used across Volkswagen Group cars – from the Skoda Superb to the Volkswagen Golf – and it’s well suited to TT. It’s matched to a six-speed manual gearbox (five speed on 180bhp models to September 2000) and emphasises the TT’s sporty feel while giving it the ability to cruise at speed. Both turbo-charged units are responsive and quick – the 180bhp gets to 60mph in 7.4 seconds and has a top speed of 140 mph while the 225bhp has a 0-60 mph time of 6.4 seconds.

There’s also an entry-level 150bhp model. The range-topping 3.2 V6 comes with a DSG gearbox but while the V6 engine sounds great it lacks the punchy nature of the smaller engine. In 2005 power was increase to 163bhp for the entry level model 1.8T, and the 180bhp model jumped to 190bhp.

The quattro all-wheel drive system delivers secure handling, even in slippery conditions but the ride can seem rather harsh, especially on uneven surfaces. It’s confident in corners though and even the front-wheel versions provide good grip and traction. Unfortunately the steering is a let down – it’s precise but lacks feedback.
