Parkers Awards 2020 - First Car of the Year Winner

Best First Car Award in partnership with… Heat

Whether you’re a young driver looking to buy your first car, or you’re investing in one for your offspring, there’s a massive range of first cars to choose from. Budget is a big factor in this category, as is the cost of insurance – but don’t forget that image is everything when you’re young. We reckon the car that embodies this best for 2020 is the newly updated Renault Clio, thanks to its good looks, competitive engine range and fantastic interior.

Taking the crown for 2020 is the brilliant Renault Clio. Newly updated this year, the latest model is the best yet, taking major strides in its overall quality. It’s impossible not to be impressed by this car’s new interior, which is solidly built, well-designed and packed with the latest technology. This Clio is a very handsome car, too, while a big boot and low running costs keep it practical for daily use. It’s also very impressive to drive – comfortable yet composed in the corners, with a good range of engines and even a hybrid on the way. It’s a deserving winner.

FORD FIESTA

The Ford Fiesta is, quite simply, the UK’s best-selling car – and it has been for so long that it’s likely to be the de facto choice for many drivers’ first foray into car ownership. The latest model is better than ever, and a wide range of engines and trim levels means there’s something for every budget. We reckon the Fiesta’s still one of the best-driving small hatchbacks about, with a really natural feel to all of its controls that makes piloting it really easy even for novice drivers. Add in competitive pricing and it’s a well-deserving runner up.

SEAT IBIZA

The Ibiza has been knocked off top spot, but it’s still a very good car and well worthy of consideration. First cars must be equal parts desirable and practical, stylish enough to attract those who’ve just passed their driving tests and, crucially, be cheap enough for them to run. The small SEAT ticks all of these boxes. Its small-but-mighty engines offer plenty of power with rock-bottom running costs, while its dinky dimensions and sharp styling hide an interior that’s about the most practical in this class.
