The highly-anticipated Volkswagen ID.3 has taken a step closer to its UK launch with the confirmation that people who pre-booked the 1st Edition last year are now able to order their car.

Volkswagen has also confirmed that the on-the-road price of the ID.3 1st Edition is £38,880 before any Government grant is applied. To secure one of these early car’s build slots, UK pre-bookers are now being asked to place a £750 non-binding deposit. If you’ve missed this one, orders will open for the regular version later.

The special edition ID.3 gets standard LED headlights, 19-inch Andoya alloy wheels and tinted rear windows, along with a black-coloured roof, side skirts, boot and rear spoiler.

Also included on the 1st Edition is adaptive cruise control, front assist and lane assist, as well as parking sensors and a reversing camera. It’s a bit of a techfest inside, too, with a fully digital dashboard, ambient lighting with 30 colour options, and the ID.Light – an LED band the width of the  windscreen, which changes its pattern and colour to supplement and support Navigation signals, charging status, driver assist technologies or voice control.

Also included: free power

ID.3 pre-bookers will also get 2,000kWh of power dispensed for free via Volkswagen’s We Charge card, which works on the Ionity charging network. Volkswagen says it’s worth around £500 and should give around 34 rapid charges on its network.

Andrew Savvas, Volkswagen UK Managing Director, said: ‘an overwhelming number of customer signed up as pre-bookers last year and placed a £750 deposit, even before they saw the final ID.3 unveiled. In fact, during the first few hours of pre-booking demand was so unprecedented it momentarily crashed our website. It has created a huge stir.’

What this means for you

There’s a buzz about the ID.3, and Volkswagen is keen to make a big splash for its long-awaited (and delayed) UK launch. Sadly, Volkswagen has yet to confirm UK delivery dates, although the word from Germany is that deliveries are still likely to take place ‘during the summer’,

Although the on-the-road price for the 1st Edition looks expensive, we’ll wait until we see the monthly payments on PCP finance and personal leasing (PCH) of the regular models before commenting on the value of this exciting new car.

For those who missed the pre-booking slots, don’t fret. We suspect the pricing of the regular ID.3 minus some of its flashy interior equipment will be a whole lot more tempting, with a starting price for the entry-level model estimated to be from around £28,000.
