DS Automobiles has revealed the UK line-up and prices for the new DS No4, which arrives later this year with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric E-Tense powertrains. Prices start at £32,200 for the Pallas+ Hybrid, with the electric model capable of up to 279 miles on a single charge.

The updated model introduces a bolder front end, an intricate black grille and a distinctive light signature inspired by the DS E-Tense performance concept. Four trims are available – Pallas, Pallas+, Étoile and Étoile Nappa – all offering DS’s trademark blend of elegance and high-end craftsmanship.

The electric E-Tense variants deliver 213hp and 343Nm of torque, with rapid charging from 20-to-80% in less than 30 minutes using a 100kW charger. The plug-in hybrid combines a 180hp petrol engine and 110hp electric motor for 225hp and 360Nm of torque, plus up to 50 miles of electric-only range. The self-charging hybrid uses a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 28hp motor, capable of running on electric power for up to half of urban journeys.

What this means for you

If you want a premium hatchback that isn’t an Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series, and like having the option to go electric, the DS No4 is one of the few that gives you all three options – hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric. That flexibility makes it easier to match the car to your driving habits without compromise.

The electric range figures are competitive. The E-Tense’s 279-mile WLTP claim puts it right up against mainstream EV rivals, while the plug-in hybrid’s 50-mile electric range will cover most daily commutes without burning fuel.

Price reductions of more than £2,000 across hybrid and plug-in hybrid models make the No4 better value than before, and could help tempt buyers away from established German brands.

Editor’s view: left field challenger could be a surprise

DS might not be the first name that comes to mind for a family hatchback, but the No4 shows the brand is carving out a niche for style-conscious buyers who don’t want to drive what everyone else has. The interior detailing and design touches are a world away from the mainstream, and that’s a big part of the appeal.

The fully electric E-Tense is the stand-out here – decent range, quick charging and strong performance, all wrapped in something that’ll stand out in the supermarket car park. The PHEV’s 50-mile EV capability is also generous for the class.

The only challenge for DS is getting people to look past the badges they know. If you’re open to something different, the No4 is worth a test drive, especially now that the pricing is more competitive.
