Citroën e-C3 boot space, practicality and safety

2024 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 4.2 out of 54.2

  • Spacious interior with lots of room to spread out
  • Rear space is particularly generous for a supermini
  • Good-sized boot, hampered by a big loading lip

How much space is there?

For a small car, the Citroen e-C3 has an expansive interior. It feels airy and spacious up front, belying the C3’s small car stature. The tall roof, use of light coloured headlining and flat surfaces adds to the feeling of airiness, and there’s plenty of lounging room for the driver and front passenger.

The roominess in the front is reflected in the rear, too. Space is surprisingly plentiful thanks to the high roof, meaning a six-foot passenger can sit behind similarly tall driver without their knees touching the seat back. Only the high floor hampers space in the rear – one of our shorter testers noted that even their thighs were lifted off the base of the seats thanks to the raised floor.

Rear leg- and headroom is excellent for a small car, footspace is less impressive.

Citroen e-c3 boot space and storage

The boot has 310 litres of luggage capacity which is only 16 litres less than a Renault 5, but it’s less usable courtesy of an awkwardly high loading lip, which means it resembles looking into a wishing well. It does at least have 100 litres of boot space over a MINI Cooper Electric.

The rear seat splits 60:40, and you can stow 992 litres with both folded down, but there is no false floor trickery here, leaving a stepped boot floor, which can be quite inconvenient. The rear seats don’t fold flat either, further hindering usability.

The hump left by the rear seats folding flat will make loading longer items a pain.

Cabin storage is better, as there are large door bins in the front and small cubbies in the centre console. There are two cupholders in the front and a place to place a mobile phone. There’s less storage in the back thanks to smaller door bins. Some smartphone-sized flaps in the back of the front seats are also included.

Is it easy to park?

Yes. The small dimensions, large windows, slab sides, and lofty driving position all help make e-C3 easy to place on the road with good visibility. Finger-tip light steering at low speeds helps with manoeuvrability, too.

Tech-wise, it’s far from class-leading. The base-spec Plus only ships with rear parking sensors, you’ll need a Max for a reversing camera. There isn’t an option for front parking sensors whatsoever, nor any clever parking assistance.

Safety

  • No Euro NCAP score as of yet
  • All the essential safety features you’d expect for a supermini
  • Rivals offer more safety tech

The Citroen e-C3 has not been tested by Euro NCAP yet, but we’ll be sure to update this page should this car (or the underpinning-sharing Fiat Grande Panda and Vauxhall Frontera) get put through their paces. A five-star rating for the MINI Cooper Electric and BYD Dolphin Surf is where we want the e-C3 to land, or at the very least match the Renault 5 and Hyundai Inster – both scoring four stars out of five.

There’s all the essential safety equipment you’d expect on a modern car including six airbags, lane departure warning, speed limit recognition and a driver attention alert. There’s no adaptive cruise control or blind spot monitoring though, safety tech seen on more and more small cars – including its key rivals mentioned above.
