FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the Fiat Panda

  • What is the Fiat Panda?
  • The Fiat Panda has been the most popular car in Italy for decades – it’s a tiny yet practical car ideally suited to life in the city. The Panda’s remit through the years has been rugged simplicity – these cars don’t go wrong often, and are super-simple to repair when they do.

The first Panda went on sale in the UK in 1980 and it’s now in its third generation, going head to head with other city cars such as the Volkswagen Up, Hyundai i10 and Toyota Aygo. The latest model update added of-the-minute hybrid engine tech, bringing the Panda more in line with its competition.
  • Which versions of the Fiat Panda are available?
  • The Panda has one of the widest ranges of any small car. Firstly, there’s the standard model, which is available in three trim levels. But there’s also a luxury model, a Waze model with navigation, and a City Cross which apes the look of an off-roader. Then, of course, there’s the Panda 4x4 – fitted with four-wheel drive, it’s a surprisingly capable mud-plugger. A more extreme Panda Cross 4x4 takes this one step further. Finally, the Hybrid is its own, standalone car.

At least the Panda’s engine range is simple – there are three to choose from, dependent on which model you select. The basic 1.2-litre engine is fine for most applications, while the 0.9-litre two-cylinder TwinAir is particularly peppy, but quite thirsty for a city car. The most compelling option is the Hybrid, which is the most efficient of the bunch. A diesel was previously available, and quite popular – you’ll find plenty of used examples.
  • Is the Fiat Panda good to drive?
  • In its own way, yes. The Panda is small, light and eminently chuckable, with a tight turning circle making it great to drive around town. It suffers a little bit on faster roads and motorways, where it tends to lack power and also get blown about a bit by high winds. These are criticisms that can be laid at almost any city car, though. What’s not quite so good is the Panda’s steering, which takes lightness to the extreme. It’s rather vague as a result.
  • Should I buy a Fiat Panda?
  • If you want to be like half of Italy, go right ahead… In all seriousness, the Panda’s a popular city car for a reason – it’s affordable, characterful, practical and dependable.

The Fiat Panda is showing its age compared to some city cars, though, particularly against recently updated models such as the Hyundai i10 or Volkswagen Up. We’d definitely recommend test-driving your options before you opt for the Fiat.
