FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the Fiat Punto

  • What is the Fiat Punto?
  • The Punto was Fiat’s volume supermini, on sale in the UK from 1994 until 2018. It competed in an incredibly competitive segment, going head-to-head with cars such as the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, but later models tended not to be as impressive as the first two generations.

The Punto was discontinued in the UK with the last generation having been on sale for 13 years – first as the Grande Punto, then the Punto Evo, then just plain Punto. By this time it was very much feeling its age, and the final straw was its retest by crash-testing organisation Euro NCAP where it scored the first-ever zero-star result.
  • Which versions of the Fiat Punto are available?
  • The Punto is no longer on sale but through its life it was available in a wide array of trim levels over its 13 years on sale. Towards the end of its life it was pitched very much on the budget end of the supermini spectrum and as such, was only available in basic trim levels named Pop+ and Easy+. Head further back into the timeline and you’ll find everything from Active to Dub to Eleganza to Sporting – it’s a baffling array, and if searching on the used market you’d be better off hunting for specific features you like rather than counting on the trim level.

A variety of engines were available over the Punto’s lifespan, shared with other members of the Fiat family. Basic 1.2-litre units are popular now as large but cheap cars for young drivers, while the flagship models had a 133hp 1.4-litre turbocharged unit. One of the best of the bunch is Fiat’s two-cylinder TwinAir engine, which punches well above its tiny size.
  • Is the Fiat Punto good to drive?
  • The Punto was never particularly engaging to drive and that only got worse over its long, long lifespan. It’s not as sharp as a Ford Fiesta or VW Polo, but that’s not to say it’s particularly bad – just very average. Used models will compare favourably with other rivals in the same price bracket and you’ll likely be more than happy with the Punto in city driving, where its light steering and tight turning circle come into their own.
  • Should I buy a Fiat Punto?
  • The Fiat Punto is reasonable value as a used buy so if you’re looking for a relatively modern, well-equipped and spacious supermini it could well be a good choice. Consider similar examples of more modern superminis, however, such as the Ford Fiesta or Skoda Fabia – by the time the Punto reached the end of its life in 2018, it was a very old car.
