  • Up to 298 miles official range
  • More like 200-235 in the real world
  • 10-80% rapid charge in 28 minutes

What are the running costs?

The S5’s entry-level 47.1kWh pack offers up to 211 miles of range officially, and the 62.1kWh pack offers up to 298 miles, or 289 in the better equipped Trophy trim. The smaller pack has a 120kW max charging speed for 10-80% in 24 minutes on a punchy enough rapid charger. The big one ups this to a maximum of 139kW for a 28 minute 10-80% time.

MG doesn’t quote a 0-100% time for a 7.4kW wallbox like you’ve probably got at home, but the 10-100% figure is more representative of most owners anyway. The small battery takes eight and a half hours, with the larger one needing 11 and a half.

You can go farther in an EV3 or Elroq, but it’ll cost a lot more.

We achieved a 3.2 miles per kWh (mpk) efficiency rating in the 64kWh variant on a swiftly driven test route, which would put the real-world range around 204 miles. More sensible use with lots of urban stop start traffic in summer brings the figure up to 3.8mpk, or 235 miles. That’s usefully more than the Elroq 60, although big battery versions of that and the Kia EV3 go even farther on a charge.

Servicing and warranty

MG provides a generous seven year or 80,000 mile warranty that is transferrable should you decide to sell. The battery gets a separate eight year or 100,000 mile warranty that’ll repair or replace it should its usable capacity drop below 70%.

Our test car performed without fault over a week’s use.

MG recommends servicing the S5 every year, or if you’ve driven 15,000 miles before you’ve celebrated your first anniversary of ownership. A service plan is available with the option to pay up-front or monthly.

Reliability

Basing the S5 on the MG4 does bring a few concerns, as owners have reported issues with charging, fit and finish and infotainment. Our S5 test car certainly had no visible quality issues and performed faultlessly. I can’t say that of some European competitors.

Parts supply has been an issue should you need to repair your MG, although dealers are generally very helpful and pleasant to deal with.
