Safety and practicality

Only the driver was provided with an airbag as standard, while side airbags were never offered. Although the TF was never tested by Euro NCAP, it performed well in crash tests of the era and was even rated as one of the safest cars of its type for pedestrian impacts. Security was more reassuring, with a standard-fit alarm, immobiliser and deadlocks to help protect against theft.

For a compact mid-engined sports car, the TF offered surprising practicality. Behind the engine sat a decently sized boot – enough for a weekend’s luggage or a pair of squashy bags. Up front, under the bonnet, there was additional storage space, and the cabin offered some compartments for small-item stowage.

Accessing the main boot could be a bit awkward due to the height and depth of the opening, but for most day-to-day or touring needs, the car was perfectly adequate. Many owners found creative ways to make the most of the available room, and some even fitted bespoke luggage sets to maximise space.

While the MG TF was never going to rival a saloon or estate for load capacity, its layout made it more practical than many might assume. For those happy to pack light and plan ahead, the TF was a surprisingly usable little roadster.
