MG TF Convertible (2002-2005) verdict

Is the MG TF a good used car?
The MG TF offers a tempting combination of low prices, sharp handling, compact dimensions and classic British roadster charm. It is a car that rewards enthusiastic driving, thanks to its balanced chassis and mid-engined layout. In terms of value, few cars offer as much driving fun for so little outlay. Yes, a Toyota MR2 is more reliable, and the Mazda MX-5 is more fun, but neither are as affordable or useable.
However, buyers must be cautious. The TF is infamous for headgasket issues and cooling system weaknesses, and although many have been repaired or upgraded, it remains a car that demands proactive maintenance. Rust can also be a serious issue, so careful inspection is essential.
For the best experience, a well-maintained TF135 or TF160 is the sweet spot, offering the most power and enjoyment without compromising too heavily on usability or reliability. Chinese-built cars from Nanjing Automobile Corporation (NAC), and, current brand owner, Shanghai Automobile Industry Corporation (SAIC) MG add better rust resistance, but sourcing parts for these later models can be trickier.
Buy carefully, and the MG TF remains one of the most engaging and best-value small sports cars you can own. Choose the right one, and it will reward you with years of fun top-down motoring.
