Frequently asked questions about the Peugeot 208

  • What is the Peugeot 208?
  • The 208 is Peugeot’s supermini – the French brand’s answer to cars such as the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo or Vauxhall Corsa. First introduced as a replacement for the 207 in 2012, its replacement signalled that Peugeot was ending its naming progression at ‘08’ – so there have been two generations of 208 so far, and the next one will also be named thus.

The 208 straddles the line between premium small cars like the MINI and Audi A1 and more pedestrian rivals like the Renault Clio or Fiesta – it’s a well-built and stylish offering, with some interesting design decisions that help it to stand out from the crowd. A strong range of engines and wide variety of trim levels also aid matters.
  • Which versions of the Peugeot 208 are available?
  • Currently the 208 is offered with a choice of three petrol engines and one diesel, in a wide variety of trim levels that cater for most needs. There’s also an all-electric model, which is badged e-208 and covered in a separate review. Peugeot’s trim structure is simple, with Active and Allure making up the lower end and GT Line and GT the more premium. The petrol engines are a great choice, being 1.2-litre units from Peugeot’s ‘Puretech’ family.
  • What is the Peugeot 208 GTI?
  • Based on the first-generation Peugeot 208 – and sadly showing no signs of returning for the second generation – the Peugeot 208 GTI is one of the finest hot hatchbacks offered on the UK market, and one that can easily hold a candle to giants such as the Ford Fiesta ST.

Conjuring up memories of the amazing 205 GTI, the 208 GTI is powerful, fast, and incredible fun, with levels of grip and handling finesse that shame even some supposed ‘sports’ cars. A good used example could be a future classic in the making.
  • Is the Peugeot 208 good to drive?
  • Generally, yes. The first-generation model was nothing spectacular, but was far from bad. It debuted Peugeot’s i-Cockpit layout, which shifts the instrument dials upwards so the driver views them over the top of a shrunken steering wheel rather than by looking through it. This can lead to an awkward driving position making the 208 uncomfortable for some drivers. The second-generation model is much better to drive, handling well and with a much more natural-feeling steering setup.
  • Should I buy a Peugeot 208?
  • It’s not the best supermini in the world but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t opt for a Peugeot 208 – it’s a handsome, practical small car with enough interesting features to keep boredom at bay for a good while. We’d thoroughly recommend the second-generation model over the first though as it’s a huge improvement.
