Should you buy one?

The Renault Arkana is an interesting petrol-only addition to the family car ranks that does without a plug-in hybrid option. That alone makes it hard to recommend for a lot of people, as does the firm ride and rather drab interior.

To look at it in a more positive light, though, it stands out from the crowd, offers plenty of space and equipment and is great value for money.

More radical models, with a higher degree of electrification, are available from Renault and elsewhere, if that’s what you want, but for those who want a contemporary-looking vehicle and don’t want to go electric, this is an appealing choice.

What we like

The Arkana is really well priced for your money with some excellent deals available to get you behind the wheel. There’s plenty of bang for your bucks, with lots of space for the price and a surprisingly sporting drive, poor acceleration notwithstanding.

What we don’t like

The engine line-up lacks inspiration, with the E-tech hybrid delivering average performance at best and reasonable but not outstanding fuel economy. But it’s the firm ride that turns us off the most – try before you buy to make sure it doesn’t bother you as much as it does us.
