Should you buy a SEAT Leon?

With sharp-edged styling and a sporting character, the SEAT Leon remains a very appealing medium hatchback. It’s not just one to buy with the heart, though – on more practical considerations, the Leon scores very strongly too. It’s roomy, efficient, well-equipped and competitively priced, whether you’re considering paying through PCP finance or making the most of generous online discounts for cash buyers.

The Leon’s model line-up covers just about the full spectrum of motoring, too. Those on a budget won’t feel cheated by the excellent entry-level 1.0-litre TSI petrol, or even low-end SE trim – the former provides decent performance while the latter has all the essential equipment you’ll need. Company car drivers will find plenty to like in the efficient 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre diesel engines, and if you spend all day in the car then higher-spec Leons offer plenty of top-drawer equipment and technology.

We'd suggest a 1.0-litre or 1.5-litre TSI engine matched with SE Dynamic or FR trim for the best blend of performance and equipment, and as these are popular models, you should be able to strike a decent deal one too.

Arguably best of all are the Cupra performance models. These are truly world-class hot hatchbacks, providing scorching performance without making a fuss. They’re eminently usable every day, but will happily take on a B-road blast too. Cupra models also retain strong value compared with their Volkswagen GTI companions.

The Leon shares its engines, technology and many other elements with the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf, but is cheaper than both – whether financed through SEAT’s PCP scheme or bought with cash. The same is true of the Skoda Octavia, however, and that’s significantly larger than the Leon, making it the car to go for if practicality is top of your list.

Regardless of which model you go for, solid build quality, good looks and thoroughly respectable driving manners are common across the SEAT Leon range. It’s one of the best family hatchbacks you can buy, and should definitely be on your shortlist if you’re considering purchasing in this class.
