Fuel economy

A more stringent standard for fuel economy (WLTP) was introduced from September 2017, and this model was not required to undergo that test. Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 33 - 33 mpg. However these figures are less likely to be achievable in real world driving and so should never be compared to another car's mpg which was measured under the newer, more realistic WLTP system.

Despite its extra performance, the Golf R has the same servicing schedule as the rest of the Golf range. That means you can opt for the Longlife programme, which is designed for cars that cover more than 25 miles a day (mainly longer distance journeys at constant speeds). The on-board computer lets you know when a service is due but it can typically be between 10,000 miles and 18,000 miles or two years.

Servicing at Volkswagen dealers is reasonably priced, but can seem expensive compared to alternatives like Ford or Vauxhall. However, you can expect great levels of customer care. Insurance is group 36 in the new 1-50 system introduced in 2010 (18 under the previous ratings) while reasonable emissions mean it avoids the most expensive car tax bands.

The claimed average economy figure is 33mpg, but enthusiastic driving (which is quite likely in the R) will see this rapidly drop.

Considering it boasts more than 270bhp and a 0-62mph time of less than 6.0 seconds, the R is reasonable in terms of emissions and economy. It can average 33mpg while the DSG models are even better at 34mpg. CO2 emissions are 199g/km of CO2.

Volkswagen has become a byword for quality and reliability and the Golf has proved that over the years. As the high performance model, the R has undergone the same rigorous testing as the rest of the range and as a result should prove durable and reliable.
