Is the Volvo V70 (2000–2007) a good used car?

If you’re after a large, practical estate car with a sense of solidity and long-distance comfort, the Volvo V70 remains a compelling used buy. Few cars of this era can match its blend of refinement, understated style and outright usability – and even fewer offer the same breadth of choice when it comes to engines and trims.

Whether you opt for a dependable D5 diesel, a smooth five-cylinder petrol or the high-performance V70 R, the fundamentals are sound. These are well-built, characterful cars that – when properly looked after – can take high mileages in their stride. The huge boot and relaxed cabin make them ideal for family life, commuting or load-lugging duties.

But there are caveats. Suspension wear, electrical gremlins and neglected servicing are common on tired examples, and some parts (especially on rarer models) can be expensive to replace. Auto gearboxes in particular need careful checking, and facelifted models tend to be more reliable and better equipped.

As ever, the key to a good Volvo V70 is condition and history. Find one with a full service record, tidy interior and sensible ownership – ideally with receipts for suspension, fluids and regular maintenance – and you’ll have a very usable and rewarding estate car for years to come.
