The A3 is packed with electronic safety gadgets and has a strong body so it’s no surprise it was awarded a four-star Euro NCAP rating. Audi A3 safety is good, but not class-leading (the Golf, with which it shares many components gets five stars), however all models have an alarm/immobiliser and remote central locking with deadlocks.

Thanks to the increased length rear passengers benefit from a slightly more legroom, but while the Sportback’s boot boasts a 20-litre advantage over the three-door car, there’s nothing particularly clever in terms of practicality. The rear seats feature a 60/40-split fold, but you can’t tumble the base to get a flat load area. On the plus side there’s decent storage up front including useful door pockets and a good-sized glovebox.
