This generation of the A4 was not Euro NCAP crash tested, though the previous generation – which is structurally similar – gained four stars. All cars have dual front and side airbags, ABS and head restraints that help to counter whiplash. On the security front there is a Thatcham Category One alarm and immobiliser system fitted.

The boot can be opened remotely and comes with a versatile double level when needed, plus scope to flatten the load area for maximum capacity – although the back seats never fold completely flat which can be annoying if you’ve got bulky objects to move. An underfloor, easy-to-clean tray is useful and adds to the storage capacity.
