Parkers overall rating: 4.8 out of 5 4.8
  • No crash test result from Euro NCAP
  • But the R8 should be up to Audi's usual standards
  • Unlike other Audis, just one screen in the R8

Underpinning the R8’s design is a lightweight but incredibly strong chassis and a body built from aluminium. The combination of both mean it’s incredibly stiff and strong, which means usual levels of Audi safety aren't compromised, although there's no independent crash test by Euro NCAP to verify it.

There’s an Isofix point for the passenger seat, and each seat also gets front, side, head and thorax airbags as standard. Other safety equipment installed in every R8 Coupe includes cruise control, keyless entry and start, plus parking sensors.

Each car, barring the limited edition Rear-Wheel Series, has Quattro four-wheel drive system so there’s plenty of traction available, while higher-powered R8s also feature carbon ceramic brakes as standard – they’re optional on normal models.

We found Audi’s Virtual Cockpit arrangement helps with safety too, since your eyes only require a minor movement from the road ahead and all of the information is presented in one location. That means no turning your head to see a separate satnav screen, which means you can concentrate harder on the joy of driving the R8.

Optional safety kit includes a reversing camera, a self-parking system, automatic high-beam headlights and even LED laser headlights, which we’ve tested and work fantastically well.

  • Pleasantly spacious cabin for a sports car
  • Luggage space, by contrast, is miserable
  • Width means it can be awkward around town

Audi R8 Coupe seats infographic

You'll struggle to find a two-seater high performance car that feels as roomy as the Audi R8 Coupe. Sure, you sit low, but you're also positioned well-back and nearer the centre of the car, meaning there's plenty of space around you. Only the tallest of occupants will struggle for headroom.

Oddments stowage is acceptable rather than good: there's a pair of cupholders and a cubby in the centre console to complement the glovebox, plus bottle holders in the doors.

Although the R8's not outrageously wide, it feels broad from the driver's seat - those bulging wings and low seating position can make it tricky to manoeuvre in tight urban confines, for instance.

In almost every other scenario it's fine, though, taking up a similar amount of space on the road as an Audi A3, so finding a parking space won't prove tricky. The biggest headache you'll have is opening the very wide doors if there's another vehicle parked either side.

Audi R8 Coupe boot infographic

The front boot of the R8 Coupe offers enough room for one soft bag for a weekend away, its official capacity of 112 litres inevitably struggling with anything bigger than that. Its luggage space is quite deep, so you might find you stack your luggage vertically.

Should you need to store more, there is an area behind the seats which can offer up to 226 litres of room (including space for a golf bag), but you’ll have to make sure you can live with the seats pushed forwards to accommodate such loads.
