Should you buy one?

The BMW 3 Series is easy and comfortable to drive, while also remaining a brilliantly involving driver’s car. Quiet when cruising, it also benefits from a lot of modern technology, and items such as the infotainment still impress. The interior is perhaps a little anonymous, but the quality remains superb throughout.

It’s even a practical option for families – there’s more rear space than in its Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 rivals, and the boot is about as good as you can get in this class. There’s a wide selection of engines and trim levels to choose from, and although it’s not the cheapest option, standard equipment is generous and the 3 Series far from poor value.

As such, we believe the BMW 3 Series is still the best conventional compact executive saloon you can buy.

What we like

The 3 Series is sharp to drive yet comfortable, and offers a strong range of engines that manage to provide performance and efficiency. It’s spacious for people, ok for luggage, comes well-equipped and holds its value well. Reliability should be good, and the brand image is very clear.

What we don’t like

The interior lacks a little flair compared to the likes of the Mercedes C-Class, and the stop-start system can be a little frustrating. As with all its competitors, the BMW is not a cheap car, but you do get your money’s worth.
