Is it any good?

Like the related Atto 3 SUV, the BYD Dolphin is a good car that’s missing out on that last little bit of polish. However, considering you’re getting a very practical hatchback with a decent real-world range and, in the case of 60kWh models, punchy acceleration, for less than £30k, a few rough edges are forgivable.

The Dolphin’s spacious interior is a huge highlight, providing more space for passengers than many cars from the class above. We also like the interesting design and appealing materials inside, while the ride is more comfortable than many rivals. Given the bargain pricing, it’s well worth considering.

What we like

There’s enough space for four six-foot plus adults to get comfortable, even with a panoramic roof fitted while the boot is bigger than most electric cars at this price point. We also like the supple suspension, impressive efficiency, punchy performance and funky interior that’s stacked full of equipment.

What we don’t like

It’s not huge amounts of fun to drive and there are too many warnings and other interruptions when you’re in motion. And while the boot is big for a car of this price, an MG 4 or VW ID.3‘s boot is even bigger.
