Top new cars for value and kit

  • The best cars to choose for value and standard kit
  • A full rundown of the equipment you get in each car
  • From small city cars to large 4x4s and saloons

New cars always come with some kit fitted as standard, but often getting the specification you want can prove very expensive if you have to tick the optional extras list. So here's the top new cars that come fully loaded as standard and at a bargain price.

Cadillac BLS Saloon 2.0T SE 4d

Price new: £22,682

Target price £20,650

The Americans build cars for comfort not for speed and this is a classic example where £20k for a motor with a cracking stereo and all the gizmos should not be sniffed at. The BLS's equipment rosta obliterates even a top-spec Ford Mondeo's kit list.

Stability control, Bluetooth, cruise control, rear park assist, DVD touchscreen sat-nav, electric folding mirrors, 11-speaker BOSE stereo, MP3 connectivity.

Citroen C4 1.6 16v VTi Exclusive 5dr

Price new £17,045

Target price: £15,100

Ok this is the top-spec C4 hatch, but for just over £15k you get pretty much the whole lot. Makes a mid-spec Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra look positively ordinary. If you want a Focus with this sort of kit you'll need to pay at least £18k.

Sat-nav, climate control, electric folding mirrors, 17-inch alloys, MP3 compatible CD player, six airbags, Bluetooth connectivity, stability control.

Honda Jazz 1.2 SE-T VSA 5dr

Price new: £13,245

Target price: £13,100

This is a best-kept secret - small hatchback that'll deliver a decent sat-nav, some nice wheels, MP3  and Bluetooth connectivity, all for a very competitive £13k. The Jazz isn't sexy but it does make a lot of sense if you want some luxuries in your city runabout.

Sat-nav, CD player with MP3 facility, Bluetooth connectivity,
15-inch alloys, air-con, stability control.

Jaguar XF 3.0-litre Luxury 4dr

Price new: £29,140

Target price: £29,000

The clue's in the title: if you want luxury as well as value for money, ditch the 5-Series or E-Class. Jaguar doesn't do things by halves and this mid-spec motor should be a no-brainer for anyone with a £30k budget. If you must, shell out £1,500 extra for 19-inch alloys - it'll bust the budget by £500 but you'll get a much better-looking car.

Sat-nav with 7inch touch screen, parking sensors, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 connection, six-CD player, eight-speaker audio system, 17-inch alloys, auto climate control, steering wheel paddleshifts, cruise control, steering-wheel-mounted controls, traction control.

Smart 1.0 mhd 71bhp Passion 2dr

Price new £9,430

Target price: £9,350

Little car, big kit. With touchscreen sat-nav, Bluetooth, climate control and MP3 this micro hybrid city car won't cost you an arm and a leg to buy and run.

Touchscreen sat-nav, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 connection, single CD, traction control, climate control.

Kia Sorento 4x4 2.2 CRDi KX-2 4WD 5dr

Price new: £25,495

Target price: n/a

The old Sorento was a bit stingy, but the Korean company dipped into its pocket to give you the KX-2 version. We don't have a target price for the 2010 facelifted model yet, but Kia salespeople welcome hearty hagglers so we think a £1,500 discount isn't an unreasonable target.

Leather seats, parking sensors, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 connection, multi-CD player, heated seats, dual zone climate control, cruise control.

MINI One Media Pack 1.6

Price new: £14,780

Target price: n/a

Minis are sparse and uncompromising but thankfully, the Germans have recognised the need to introduce 'estate agent' spec that includes sat-nav. Don't expect to get a discount though.

Sat-nav, Bluetooth, voice control, air conditioning, MP3 connection, digital radio, CD, traction control, climate control.

Nissan Note 1.5 dCi 86 Tekna 5dr

Price new: £14,795

Target price: £14,350

This is a sensible move by Nissan. Small families do require sat-nav and they don't want to be faffing about with a mobile unit. This top-spec model has just a few little extras that make life a bit easier - MP3 and automatic rain sensing wipers: perfect for a family on a budget.

Sat-nav, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 connection, traction control, climate control, single CD, automatic rain sensing wipers, 16-inch alloy wheels.

Laguna Coupe 2.0 150bhp TomTom 5dr

Price new £19,840

Target price: £19,250

If you want a bit of sexiness and a shedload of kit then you can't go wrong with the Coupe. It's actually much better value than the standard Laguna and although it isn't quite as practical, we think it's a bargain at £19k.

Sat-nav, Bluetooth, MP3 connection, parking sensors, single CD, traction control, dual zone climate control, cruise control, traction control and understeer control, 18-inch alloys, heated door mirrors, lowered suspension.

Vauxhall Antara 2.0 CDTi SE

Price new £25,855

Target price: £25,100

This is the top-spec Antara but it's bung full of equipment. It's doesn't have the kudos of the Land Rover Freelander but for £25k, that comprehensive kit list should be attractive.

Sat-nav, parking sensors, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 connection, traction control, climate control, 18-inch alloys.
