Cupra el-Born EV to go on sale in 2021

  • Cupra el-Born EV first images
  • Electric hatch has up to 310-mile range
  • Based on Volkswagen ID.3, sharp new styling

First shown in 2019 as a SEAT concept, the Cupra el-Born is the Spanish take on the electric hot hatch. As you can probably tell from these pictures, it's based closely on the Volkswagen ID.3 but sporting a sharp new look.

The Cupra el-Born is based on the same platform as the ID.3, and is powered by a 77kWh battery pack that is claimed to offer a range of up to 310 miles. The Cupra el-Born should deliver 160-miles worth of change in 30 minutes on the latest high-capacity rapid chargers.

Cupra says that it has a nippy 0-31mph time of 2.9 seconds, which should mean the el-Born will feel pretty quick off the lights in town. It's a performance-badged EV as you'd expect from Cupra – and sports a sharp look inside and out.

Although you can tell it's closely based on the ID.3, the front end gets the Cupra stying treatment, with a dramatic plunging nose, angular headlights and large wheels. In short, it's a true electric hot hatch.

Like the upcoming Cupra Formentor, which goes on sale later on 2020, the Cupra el-Born has a new floating infotainment display that’s housed in a fresh interior which is extensively trimmed in suede-like alcantara, with contrasting trim. Like the ID.3 expect the interior to be roomy – offering large car room in a medium-sized external package.

What this means for you

if you want an electric hot hatch, and the MINI Electric isn't large enough for you, then step this way. Although it's an ID.3 in a sharp suit, it appears to have enough sporting character of its own to appeal to those who want something sporty, practical and all-electric.

Cupra says: 'We have created a new sporty and dynamic design and reengineering the technological content. The el-Born is the living proof that performance and electrification are a great match.'

It's early days, and this is our first view of the el-Born, and goes on sale in 2021. We’ll find out more in the coming weeks and months.
