Citroen has always offered comfortable family cars to compete with the VW Golf, Ford Focus and Renault Megane family hatchbacks, but the original C4 offers something a little different. There are hundreds of Citroen C4s for sale in our classified ads, but which is best for you? The first generation of C4 replaced the Xsara with two distinctive styles for the three-door C4 Coupe and five-door hatchback; the Coupe includes a striking dual-window glass tailgate with integrated spoiler, and all models include a distinctive fixed-hub steering wheel, central digital dashboard, supple suspension and light, easy-to-use controls. Although there’s a varied range of engines, from 1.4-litre to 2.0-litre petrol and 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre diesel, the best all-rounder is the 110hp 1.6-litre diesel, which returns well over 50mpg in real-world driving. Practicality for both models is good, but not class-leading, with 314 litres of boot space in the C4 Coupe and 320 litres in the hatchback. And although comfort is good, the C4’s handling is not as sharp as you might expect. In 2011, a new C4 hatchback arrived. Only offered as a five-door, quality and interior design are closer to German rivals, but there’s very little character left, and a nearly-new Citroen C4 is really best considered on value. Well-made, and competent, but with nothing special to offer over a Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus, a used 2011- Citroen C4 is still a worthy alternative to a Fiat Tipo or Peugeot 308. After the dull Xsara the Citroen C4, introduced in 2004, was a design revolution with plenty of traditional Citroen styling quirks especially on the inside with its centrally mounted digital speedometer, integrated air-freshener and a fixed-hub steering wheel.

Spacious and comfortable, with supple suspension, but the cabin quality fell behind direct competition and the over-assisted steering and vague gearbox meant it wasn’t especially fun to drive. The 1.6-litre and 2-litre diesel engines are smooth, refined and frugal with the 110bhp version of the smaller unit the best compromise between running costs and performance.

In 2008 the Citroen C4 was facelifted, with changes to the bonnet and headlights the most apparent while the interior also received a welcome boost in quality.
