Genesis GV80 SUV verdict
Should you buy one?
Honestly, we came away liking the GV80, and would happily recommend one as long as drivers are aware of its foibles. The Genesis is a luxury car for non-car people. Genesis buyers will need to be happy with a purely combustion-engined SUV, from a brand that carries little to no prestige in the UK but at a similar price to already-established brands.
The GV80 feels like it has a lot of the right ingredients – a fabulous interior, rock-solid build-quality and a buying experience that very much feels as though it’s the way forward. It’s certainly one of the more convincing Genesis products we’ve tried so far. It feels like a luxury product every bit as much as its European rivals.
Our money would go on a diesel model in the absence of any hybrid or plug-in, and we’d be more tempted by entry-level cars – they’re more discreet, the the smaller wheels should improve the low-speed ride. The poor fuel economy remains a bugbear, however, and the driving experience won’t light anybody’s soul on fire.
