What are the running costs?

If you want the most economical Grecale, the best bet for efficiency is the entry-level GT’s 300hp 2.0-litre mild-hybrid power unit. This car averages 27.0mpg in official testing and produces 208g/km of emissions. During a week’s worth of testing, this broke down into an average of 25mpg, with a possible 30mpg when driven gently on the motorway. Given the performance on offer, this is perfectly acceptable – even if it lags behind diesel and plug-in hybrid models.

For the mid-range Modena, power is upped to 330hp, which makes a small but appreciable difference to the numbers – the official fuel economy drops to 26.7mpg and CO2 rises to 210g/km – whether you plump for this comnes down to how much you want the more aggreesive looks.

The range-topping Trofeo is a whole different kettle of fish – it produces 530hp for a huge hike in performance, and a small drop in mpg to 21.0mpg. CO2 emissions rise to 254g/km CO2 emissions, which thankfully falls just below of the maximum Vehicle Excise Duty figure.

Official CO2 emissions of more than 190g/km for all models put the Grecale in the highest bracket for BIK company car tax, though. As all Grecales cost more than £40,000, they’ll attract an extra VED cost between two and five years of age.

Servicing and warranty

Maserati offers the option of pre-paid service plans, depending what you want to spend on it up-front. The programme fixes prices for spare parts, consumables and labour, for the entire term of the agreement you purchase. The plan covers three services and is transferable between owners.

The Grecale gets an indifferent three-year or 50,000-mile warranty out of the box, which can be extended to up to five years without mileage restrictions. Why is it when you pay so much for the car, you can’t get a decent warranty as you would with a Kia or MG?

Reliability

The Grecale shares its platform with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, and both companies have seen their reliability improve in recent years. It’s still a relatively new car, so there aren’t any reliability issues to report as yet.

You shouldn’t expect the Grecale to be unreliable, though, and do be prepared for this possibility. On test cars we experienced a couple of small niggles with the sat-nav, but this is a problem shared with just about all of its rivals.
