Mazda 2 Hatchback verdict
Should you buy a used Mazda 2 Mk2?
There are enough around on the secondhand market for you to be a little picky, whatever the price point, so make sure you choose an example with good service history and an MOT record that doesn’t scream basket case. Do that, and we reckon a used Mazda 2 of this generation will make a sound purchase, especially if you’re after a simple runabout with a bit of zip about the driving experience.
Avoid the diesels unless you do big miles, make sure the steering and chassis don’t clonk and that all the electronic bits work, and you should be good to go. Just don’t expect masses of refinement.
Being based on the Ford Fiesta means plenty of parts compatibility, which might help with costs, but even if you stick to Mazda dealer prices, the Mazda 2 Mk2 should be cheap to run. This is a nice, affordable small car.
