If you want a classic roadster without the pain of owning a classic motor, a used Mazda MX-5 is the ideal sports car for you. Search through hundreds of Mazda MX-5s for sale near you with Parkers, and you could spend summer in the open air for less money. Starting with the original, 1990 NA-series MX-5, Mazda sought to recapture the energy of cars like the MGB, Triumph Spitfire and Lotus Elan; soon after launch, rivals in the shape of the BMW Z3 and MG F provided some healthy competition, too. A Mk 1 MX-5 features a choice of 1.6-litre or 1.8-litre petrol twin-cam engine, with pop-up headlights, a simple folding vinyl roof and direct controls, from the gearshift to the steering. A multitude of special editions can be found, but spend more time looking for rust than fancy trim on these early examples. Closely related, the 1998 to 2005 Mk 2 MX-5 (NB) lost the pop-up headlights, and gained a glass rear window and six-speed gearbox on some models. Refinement is better, but rust protection is arguably worse - buy carefully, and check underneath thoroughly as the rust is often in less visible places. If you want something easier to buy, the Mk 3 (NC) from 2005-2015 is heavier, larger overall and includes features like the option of a folding hardtop. The rather quirky looks take away the classic sports car feel, but there’s no arguing that this era of MX-5 is anything but a great open-topped two-seater for daily drivers. Enthusiasts may prefer to seek out a nearly-new Mazda MX-5, as the fourth generation from 2015-on returns to the minimalist roots of the original, though the RF’s folding hardtop looks impressive. Find a used Mazda MX-5 for sale near you now, with Parkers, and get the best value no matter which generation is best for you.
