Parkers overall rating: 4.8 out of 5 4.8
  • Front passengers well catered for…
  • Rear seats are usable only by kids
  • Not a huge amount of luggage space

If you’re sat in the front of the 992-generation Porsche 911 Coupe you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much head-, shoulder- and legroom there is. Not palatial, obviously, but hardly snug.

It’s a different story if you’re relegated to the rear. As has always been the 911’s case, the back pair are designed for kids – think pre-teens – due to their restricted head- and legroom.

Stowage space is okay, with slender pockets in the doors and small slots for odds and ends aside from the glovebox. Cupholders are present and correct – with the driver’s one located at the back of the centre console, the passenger’s popping out of the dash.

As you’re sat near the 911’s central tunnel and because the cabin section is narrower than the broad wheelarches, initially the Porsche feels wide and unwieldy, particularly in built-up areas. You soon learn that it’s not particularly large, though and in fact is remarkably nimble,

Slotting one into a regular supermarket parking bay is easy enough, although the long doors may impede your unruffled entry and exit.

Another Porsche 911 Coupe mainstay are its two luggage areas. Under the shallow bonnet up front is a modest 132-litre boot space that you’ll squeeze a couple of soft overnight bags into.

However, of more use – providing you don’t need the rear seats – is the carpeted shelf created when you fold each of them over. Doing so creates a 264-litre space between the back of the front seats and the rear screen.

Well, you didn’t expect the 911 to be worthy of visits to Ikea, did you? If you need a truly practical Porsche, buy a Cayenne.

Safety

  • Unlikely to be tested by Euro NCAP
  • Should be one of the safest sports cars on sale
  • Carrera 4, 4S and Turbo S have standard four-wheel drive

As Euro NCAP tends to focus its efforts on more mainstream cars, don’t expect the Porsche 911 Coupe to have its safety credentials tested any time soon.

However, Porsche’s engineers are skilled in engineering rigidly strong sports cars, plus, as part of the Volkswagen Group, it has access to a vast array of safety systems.

As standard, each 911 has six airbags and side-impact protection beams integral within the side door structure. There’s also a single Isofix child seat-mounting point on the front passenger seat.

Aside from that is full LED exterior lighting, a plethora of electronic stability systems and, on the Carrera 4, 4S and Turbo S, all-wheel drive.

Being a Porsche, you can further upgrade this raft of safety kit with an array of options including LED Matrix headlamps, rear-wheel steering, adaptive cruise control, Night Vision Assist and Lane Change Assist among a wealth of others.

It’s also worth noting that even the rear wash-wiper is an optional extra. As with the regular equipment, your Porsche retailer will advise on which features will be considered attractive come resale time.
