SEAT Leon (2020) side, white

  • New Leon is larger than the old one
  • More passenger room inside, front and rear
  • Boot space remains the same – but is good

How much space is there?

The SEAT Leon Hatchback has a longer wheelbase (the space between the front and rear axles) than before, giving rear-seat passengers 50mm more kneeroom. Headroom has increased for those sat up front by 3mm, but is down in the rear by 1mm owing to that sporty, plunging roofline.

There's plenty of space for four passengers, including space for feet under the front seats for those sat in the rear, as well as a good view out.

All models come with storage pockets in the back of the front seats, while all four doors get large door bins which can accommodate tall bottles - which is just as well if you sit up front, as the one located on the centre console is close enough to the gearlever to obstruct you from changing gear.

There's a handy - and huge - cubby hole between the front seats, perfect for storing phones and wallets and bottles on the go.

Boot space and storage

Boot space remains unchanged at 380 litres - the area itself is long and the load floor is flat, making the most of the capacity, more than capable of dealing with the weekly shop. The boot floor itself is quite low though, meaning you'll have to lift and drop items from quite a height above that rear bumper.

The rear seats split and fold 60:40 for larger items. We successfully carried an office chair in the boot with ease, once we'd flopped the back rests down.

Plug-in hybrid versions have a smaller boot. You can blame the various electrical gubbins associated with the motor and battery for this. The boot loses 110 litres worth of space, meaning the SEAT Leon e-hybrid's boot space is just 270 litres. It remains the same useful size as normal Leons.

Is it easy to park?

The big door mirrors help when it comes to parking and rear parking sensors come as standard. The view out is good thanks to front and rear pillars that aren’t too thick and the top of the dashboard being set quite low. The windows are also big, with a window line that isn’t too high so it's easy to pilot. Park Assist and front sensors come fitted on SE Dynamic models and upwards.

Safety

  • Five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP
  • Wide range of driver assistance tech on offer
  • Advanced Driver Assistance System as standard

As you'd expect from a new model in the family car sector, the SEAT Leon is bristling with standard and optional safety systems. Cruise control is standard but there's a predictive adaptive cruise control system, which uses mobile and satellite traffic data along with traffic-sign recognition to automatically set the car's speed depending on the conditions ahead.

The advantage to the driver is that the car will assist in the steering and will potentially anticipate dangerous situations up ahead. It's not a 'hands-free' system, though, and like all of these systems, there will be warnings from the car if the driver takes their hands off the steering wheel for more than 15 seconds.

Benefiting night-time driving, the Leon also now comes with full LED headlights, which are brighter and work better on dipped and main beam. Top models come with fully automatic and adaptive lighting. This is in addition to the usual suite of safety systems that includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) as part of SEAT's advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and lane-keeping assist.

We found the lane-keep assist system quite annoying, always nibbling at the steering with warning lights and bongs sounding if you didn't stay precisely in the middle of your lane. This can prove quite annoying, so make sure you test the system on your test drive.

There are also two Isofix points for the outer rear seats, making it easier to fit and remove child seats - handy for parents of younger children.

Euro NCAP Rating – 5 stars

The SEAT Leon Hatchback was tested by Euro NCAP in 2020 and was awarded a 5 star overall rating. This overall rating is calculated from the following individual ratings:

5 star rating
Test 2020
Individual safety ratings
Adult Occupant: 92%
Child Occupant: 88%
Vulnerable Road Users: 71%
Safety Assist: 80%

Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe. The safety ratings are determined from a series of vehicle tests, designed and carried out by Euro NCAP. These tests represent, in a simplified way, important real life accident scenarios that could result in injured or killed car occupants or other road users.
