Skoda Octavia vRS: Performance and pace

A genuine hot hatch?

I've lived with the Octavia vRS for three months now it's already covered more than 9,000 pleasureable miles - happily all problem-free. In my updates I've focussed on the Octavia's strengths - it's practicality and versatility. Now however it's time to concentrate on the vRS part of the equation.

Because while I appreciate the Skoda's generous space - what really impresses me is it's superb engine. The 2.0T FSI is most famously used in the Volkswagen Golf GTI - but it can also be found in cars such as the SEAT Leon FR and Audi TT.

Illustrious company

That puts the vRS alongside some of the best sports cars around. And it doesn't disappoint. The engine is eager from low down thanks to the fact it has a turbocharger and although not particularly vocal, it does sound good when pushed hard - with a nice rasp from the twin exhausts between gear changes.

It's refined too and is happy to pushed all the way up to the red line on the rev counter - with a smooth and predictable power delivery along the way. The gearchange has loosed up nicely now and quick shifts are now much easier. Skoda claims a 0-60mph time of 7.3 seconds which compares well against the competition:

Car 0- 62mph
Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0T FSI 7.3 secs
VW Golf GTI 2.0T FSI 7.2 secs
Audi TT 2.0T FSI 6.6 secs
SEAT Leon FR 2.0T FSI 7.3 secs
Honda Civic Type-R 2.0 6.6 secs
Ford Focus ST 2.5T 6.8 secs

Okay - so the Skoda isn't the fastest on that list, but it does feel quicker than the figures suggest. It's also worth remembering that the Octavia is larger and heavier than these alternatives too. The engine is a real gem and that fact it's used in the superb TT shows how highly the vRS should be regarded.
