Volkswagen Golf GTI (2013) review, driving

Should you buy one?

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk7 is a masterclass. It’s a fantastic everyday car, which will deliver surprising fuel economy if you take it steady, and plenty of thrills when you’re in the mood to press on.

It was sold alongside the 300hp Golf R, a more focused car with 4Motion all-wheel drive and a really potent feel. While super-impressive, many prefer the more everyday feel of the Golf GTI, and it’s certainly a car with plenty of heritage behind it. Indeed, so superb is the Mk7 Golf GTI, it’s odds-on to be a standout classic in years to come. As we say, maybe even the best of the bunch, full stop.

There’s plenty to choose from: we’d definitely take a GTI Performance, and consider the facelifted Mk7.5 if your budget can stretch that far. Collectors will pay a small fortune for the Clubsport S, but the limited-run 2017 Clubsport is still worth looking out for. But whichever Mk7 Golf GTI you buy, you’ll have a great car on your hands.

The hot hatch to keep for life? Maybe: because there may never be one as good as this.
