The Parkers Used Car Verdict

Dynamically, the MkV was arguably the best Golf ever when it arrived in 2004 and it still looks and feels great. The fact that prices have softened to very affordable levels adds to the attraction.

Apart from the few niggles mentioned elsewhere, build is top drawer, which means cars last well and provide years of trouble-free motoring. There’s a caveat, though: the financial penalty for missed regular servicing will be high, so it’s crucial to place proof of scrupulous and continuous maintenance high on your buying criteria.

Which model to go for depends on type of use and budget. We like the 1.4 FSI, but the best value probably lies in the early 1.9 TDI. If you can afford it, go for the common rail diesel from late 2008 because it’s just much smoother.

The GTI is brilliant, being remarkably quick and impressively frugal thanks to that TFSI engine.
