FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the Audi A1

  • What is the Audi A1?
  • The A1 is Audi's smallest car. It's a supermini, which means it's the same kind of size as a Ford Fiesta. Being an Audi, it's much more premium than a Fiesta though.

This poshness means the A1's main rivals are the Mini Hatchback, Volkswagen Polo, and DS 3 Crossback. The current generation has been around since 2018, but before that, the Mk1 Audi A1 was made between 2010 and 2018.
  • Which versions of the Audi A1 are available?
  • The Audi A1 is available as a five-door hatchback, which Audi refers to as a Sportback. But the A1 is also available as something called the Citycarver. This model brings a dash of crossover flavouring to the A1 range. It benefits from a raised ride height and plenty of black plastic cladding to give it off-roader vibes.

Previous generation models were available as a three-door and a five-door, as well as an S1 sporting model.
  • What is the Audi A1 Performance Version?
  • The fastest Audi A1 is the 40 TFSI petrol version. It has a 2.0-litre engine with 200hp. It dispatches the 0-62mph sprint in just 6.5seconds. It's not an out and out hot-hatch like a Honda Civic Type R, but there's no denying that it's pretty racy. If you want this engine, you'll have to plump for Audi's S-Tronic automatic gearbox.

If you want the fastest A1 outright, you'll have to look for a used S1. The S1 is the old model, and has a 250hp 2.0-litre engine. 0-62mph comes up in 5.8seconds, aided by the car's four-wheel drive system. This four-wheel drive system features a hydraulic clutch on the rear axle so power is only sent to the rear wheels when they need to be brought into play. This means despite the big power and short wheelbase combo, it never feels waywards. There's just acres and acres of grip. It's only available with a six-speed manual gearbox.
  • Is the Audi A1 good to drive?
  • Broadly speaking the A1 is a capable, but slightly bland car to drive. The A1 definitely picks refinement over sharp handling. The best way to describe it is grown up. The steering gives a good sense of confidence in how much grip the front tyres have, while the brakes are suitably strong too.

The ride is soft enough to keep most people happy on models with smaller wheels. But bigger wheels make the A1 feel slightly unsettled over broken surfaces. If you combine a roof rack with big wheels then the ride is uncomfortable. There isn't a lot of bodyroll in the A1 - which is good if you have children in the back regularly.
  • Should I buy an Audi A1?
  • If you're in the market for a small posh car, the Audi A1 is definitely worth considering. It delivers loads of technology, and its styling is modern without being brash. Its interior isn't huge, but it's not that much of a compromise when compared with the larger and more expensive Audi A3.
