Frequently asked questions about the Audi TT

  • What is the Audi TT?
  • If you haven't heard of the Audi TT before, where on earth have you been? First introduced in 1999, it's now on its third-generation. Essentially it's a coupe or a convertible that's famed for being the height of fashion. The exterior, updated in 2019, is sharp and aggressive, while the interior is stunningly minimalist, going against the trend of having huge tablet-like screens for infotainment systems.

The original TT went on sale in the UK just before the start of the new millenium and rose to fame in the early noughties due to its Bauhaus inspired design. Being both a coupe and convertible, it has plenty of alternatives. Chief of which are the BMW 2 Series, Porsche 718, Nissan 370Z, Toyota Supra, BMW Z4, and Mercedes SLC.

  • Which versions of the Audi TT are available?
  • The Mk3 TT is available as both a two-door convertible, and a two-door coupe. The TT is famed for the huge variety it offers. The regular TT Coupe and Roadster models come in Sport, S Line, Black Edition, and Vorsprung specs. While the TTS (in coupe and convertible) come in regular, Black Edition, and Vorsprung editions. While the RS coupe, and convertible, come in Audi Sport Edition and Vorsprung.

What's the difference between the regular models, the S, and the RS? Well. Regular models are available with the 40, and 45 TFSI engines. While S models come with a 306hp 2.0-litre petrol engine. The RS comes with a 2.5-litre five-cylinder 400hp engine.

Audi TTs are available as front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. From new, only petrol versions are on offer - if you want a diesel Audi TT, you'll have to search the used market.

  • What is the Audi TT Performance Version?
  • Crowning the range is the Audi TT RS.

It really pumps up the TT on all fronts. It's a bona fide sports car, and will keep up with supercars in the right situation. At the heart of the fastest TT is a 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine that makes 400hp. It propels the TT from 0-62mph in 3.7seconds, and on to a top speed of 175mph. We should also tell you that the TT RS is available in coupe and convertible trim.

The TT RS really is the junior Audi R8 - and we mean that in a good way. In case you were wondering those RS initials stand for Renn Sport - or Rally Sport in english. It's a nod to the hugely successful Audi Quattro of the early eighties - a car immensely important for the development of Audi's sportscars.

  • Is the Audi TT good to drive?
  • Broadly speaking, yes, the Audi TT is good to drive. Although it really depends on which engine you opt for. Generally no matter which engine you choose, the TT is a stable and grippy thing that's easy to drive. The brakes are particularly strong, and overall, the driving experience is predictable. Lower powered models are probably not quite as fun to drive as a hot hatch.

However, the TTS and TT RS models are four-wheel drive only, and these are much more fun to drive. The best thing about these models is that despite the big horsepower figures, they're still easy and docile to drive. Because of this, the TT is a very flattering car for most drivers.

  • Should I buy an Audi TT?
  • Yes. The Audi TT really does tick two boxes that mean a great deal to the sort of image-loving driver they attract. It looks fantastic outside. And it looks equally as crisp inside - team this with its good choice of nippy  engine options and the TT becomes a must-have car.

One thing to consider with the TT is that, although it is pricey to buy, it does hold its value well. So you should see a better proportion of your money back when it comes time to sell on. Just be careful on the options. You can spend thousands speccing up your car, with very little return when you sell it.
