Audi A6 boot space, practicality and safety

- Good rear legroom
- Clever boot extras
- Flexible rear seats
How much space is there?
The A6 Avant’s long wheelbase translates into loads of legroom for both front and rear passengers. Even taller adults can stretch out comfortably in the back, and the airy cabin feel is enhanced by wide-opening doors and an optional panoramic roof.
Headroom is good front and rear, with the sloping roofline only marginally affecting taller passengers. Three across the back isn’t too much of a squeeze either, though the centre seat is best for shorter trips.
Overall, the A6 Avant is spacious and well packaged for passengers. While not quite as airy as an E-Class, it’s more than roomy enough for family duties or executive commutes.

Audi A6 Avant boot space and storage
Boot capacity is 503 litres with the seats up – some way behind the 615-litre Mercedes E-Class and 570-litre BMW 5 Series. If you need maximum load volume, those cars will suit you better.
That said, the A6’s boot is well-shaped and beautifully trimmed. Fold the seats and you’ll have 1,534 litres to play with – close to the Volvo V90, but again behind the BMW and Merc. We like the 40:20:40 split rear seats and the underfloor storage that hides dividers and luggage restraints. It’s thoughtful and well executed.
Interior storage is decent too, with big door bins, a lidded armrest cubby and a decent glovebox. There’s not quite as much oddment space as in a Skoda Superb, but it’s enough for everyday use.
Is it easy to park?
At nearly 5m long, the A6 Avant is a big car, but it’s not too intimidating to park thanks to useful driver aids. It also helps that visibility is good thanks to slim pillars and large windows. All models come with parking cameras, sensors and a reversing camera as standard.
Higher-spec versions add a 360-degree camera and self-parking assist, which works well in tight bays or parallel parking. The steering is light, and the digital displays make manoeuvring easy.
Safety
- Five‑star Euro NCAP
- Loads of tech
- Strong LED lighting
The latest Audi A6 Avant has now been independently crash‑tested and earned a full five stars from Euro NCAP, with standout scores of 93% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child safety, 81% for vulnerable road users, and 76% for safety assist systems.
In frontal offset and full-width barrier tests, protection was solid overall, though dummy readings showed only marginal chest compression in some scenarios. Side impact performance was excellent, but again chest protection in pole impacts was rated marginal.
Standard kit includes automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition. LED headlights are standard and include adaptive functions that reduce glare while maximising visibility at night. Higher trims add extras like rear cross-traffic alert, turn assist and blind-spot warning. The systems are user-friendly and not too intrusive – useful without being annoying.
