FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the Audi E-Tron

  • What is the Audi E-Tron?
  • The Audi E-Tron was the first series production electric car from the German maker – an SUV with a big battery pack and a motor on the front and rear axle providing that trademark Quattro all-wheel drive.

While mainstream electric cars have been with us for some time now, it’s fair to say premium manufacturers hung back before committing to taking Tesla on – its Model X is a direct rival to the E-Tron, as are the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Jaguar I-Pace.

Unlike more overtly futuristic electric cars the E-Tron doesn’t make a big noise about what powers it – building on Audi’s key selling point of the past decade or so, it operates and drives with the same simplicity as an A3.
  • Which versions of the Audi E-Tron are available?
  • You can buy an Audi E-Tron in five-door SUV form, which was available from launch, or in a smarter-looking (and in theory, driving) E-Tron Sportback.

This pairing follows a similar vein to the Q3 and Q3 Sportback currently available, where the latter takes the form of a ‘coupe SUV’ or rather an off-road inspired hatchback with a less squared off bootlid.

Whichever trim you pick, you get a host of fancy gadgets like LED headlights, big 20-inch wheels and air suspension, plus a host of interior screens including Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital dials and MMI Nav Plus infotainment system.

The last two will be familiar to you if you’ve been in any of Audi’s larger saloons lately, with a two-screen set up controlling most common functions like the sat-nav and stereo as well as the climate control and seat settings.

In terms of specifications you can choose from Technik, Sport, S Line, Black Edition and top tier Vorsprung (which has everything on it) and either the 50 or 55 powertrain depending on how much poke you want your E-Tron to have.

Unique options include divisive camera door mirrors, which cut down on the car’s aerodynamic profile by reducing the bulky mirrors to stubby protrusions not unlike Shrek’s ears. These house a camera in each which is fed to a display on the inside of the door. Clever but not without controversy, this tech takes a bit of getting used to.
  • Is the Audi E-Tron good to drive?
  • It’s certainly very satisfying to drive thanks to a huge well of electric torque available from the merest flex of your ankle but in terms of delivering a driver-focussed experience, the E-Tron is probably not the electric car to pick. We’d suggest a Jaguar I-Pace if thrills behind the wheel are a priority for you. .

That’s not to say it’s bad to drive, there’s plenty of grip from the Quattro all-wheel drive and on the whole body movements are well controlled, but the E-Tron doesn’t offer up much in the way of driver involvement or feedback in the same way that even its more conventionally powered petrol and diesel cars do. .

Still, at its heart this is a quiet and refined cruiser with plenty of space for family or friends, promising a hushed cabin with its near-silent drivetrain and high levels of sound insulation.
  • Should I buy a Audi E-Tron?
  • For years Audi has been making its cars feel very predictable, and that sounds like a negative point but it isn’t. If you’re coming from any of the maker’s other models there will be almost no need to adjust to the E-Tron – other than the fact you don’t have to put liquid fuel in it anymore. .

There is no complicated start up procedure, no new drive modes or gearshift levers to get your head around, you just put it in ‘D’ and go, much like you would any other Audi with an automatic gearbox. .

If you like the contemporary Audi driving experience and interior design but want to switch to electric power then we can think of no better car for you – but bear in mind this is the first of many such models from the German maker, so you may find a bodystyle more suited to your needs is just around the corner.
