Verdict Should you buy an Audi E-Tron Sportback?

It would be doing the E-Tron Sportback a disservice to say it is essentially the same car as the already available SUV, but with a different roof.

Granted, that is the most substantial variation between the two, but there are many other smaller changes that add up to a sizably more stylish and sporty car than its boxier relative.

There’s the upmarket S Line standard trim for a start, and a stiffer suspension set up that allows for a pointier driving experience. Plus the fact it was initially offered with the more powerful 55 Quattro drivetrain.

To some these differences will add up to nothing more than a shrewd marketing exercise but at Parkers we think the E-Tron Sportback will appeal to the same drivers who would rather have an A5 Sportback than an A4 Saloon. Just because the cars we're talking about are tall-riding SUVs doesn’t mean a market shouldn't exist for a sharper silhouette.

And at its heart the E-Tron Sportback remains a good electric car – it might not offer the same straight line acceleration or cornering agility as its rivals, but those things are not the top of everyone’s list of priorities.

Pick the Audi if you want a top quality interior and nailed-to-the-tarmac driving experience, and the Sportback if you prioritise style over outright practicality. Just like Audi's more conventionally powered cars, really.
