With mainstream manufacturers launching a series of small crossovers, it was inevitable premium-badged cars wouldn’t be too far behind; in 2011 the Audi Q3 joined the fray.

This was later than its nearest rival, the BMW X1 and its in-house competitor, the Volkswagen Tiguan, but the result was as expected – the underpinnings of the regular Audi A3 covered by a shrunken Q5-like exterior. It seemed to be exactly what the market wanted.

Its compact dimensions ensured the Audi Q3 wasn’t terribly expensive to run, particularly if you stuck to economical TDI diesels with front-wheel drive. Petrol engines, quattro four-wheel drive and a choice of manual or automatic transmissions, as well as a range of trim levels ensured there was a Q3 for most buyers’ needs.
