Citroën C4 Hatchback (11-18) - rated 3 out of 5

After the dull Xsara the Citroen C4, introduced in 2004, was a design revolution with plenty of traditional Citroen styling quirks especially on the inside with its centrally mounted digital speedometer, integrated air-freshener and a fixed-hub steering wheel.

Spacious and comfortable, with supple suspension, but the cabin quality fell behind direct competition and the over-assisted steering and vague gearbox meant it wasn’t especially fun to drive. The 1.6-litre and 2-litre diesel engines are smooth, refined and frugal with the 110bhp version of the smaller unit the best compromise between running costs and performance.

In 2008 the Citroen C4 was facelifted, with changes to the bonnet and headlights the most apparent while the interior also received a welcome boost in quality.
