Genesis GV70 boot space, practicality and safety

2021 onwards (change model)
Practicality rating: 4 out of 54.0

  • Plenty of room upfront
  • Rear slightly less impressive
  • Average storage space up front

How much space is there?

As you’d expect for a generously-proportioned family SUV, there’s plenty of space for people inside the Genesis GV70. All models have some form of electrically-assisted adjustment for the driver’s seat, although just how much comes down to which model you choose.

Still, the driving position is good, with the commanding view that comes part and parcel of being a high-set SUV. Those in the rear are reasonably well served, too, although the well-shaped rear seat isn’t backed up with quite the same amount of space as some of its rivals. Choose a Luxury Line model, and you’ll love the quilted leather experience front and rear.

Boot space and storage

Boot space is up to the demands of most families, certainly on a daily basis. It’s well shaped with a low loading lip and a false floor for additional storage. As it’s a lifestyle orientated car, you get a power outlet and curry hook.

The rear seat folds down with a 60:40 split to reveal a flat loadbay that’s up with the best of its rivals. The back seats are dropped by a pair of levers near the tailgate so you can lower them without resorting to opening the rear passenger doors. Luggage volume is 540 litres with the rear seats in place and 1,610 with them folded. That compares with 483 and 1,410 litres for the Volvo XC60.

Inside the cabin you also get a well-sized glovebox and large doorbins, a pair of cupholders and a deep cubbyhole in the centre console.

Is it easy to park?

Forward visibility is good, but there’s no escaping that this is a large car, and you’re going to need a fair bit of help squeezing this into a typical UK-sized parking bay. There are parking sensors all-round and a reversing camera as standard, and we love the mirror view on displayed on the dashboard to help get you nearer the kerb safely.

Safety

  • Five-star rating from Euro NCAP in 2021
  • Lots of safety equipment as standard
  • Plenty of safety technology on offer

The Genesis GV70 is available with a range of safety technology designed to keep the car out of harm’s way and protect the driver. Its safety credentials have been validated by Euro NCAP, which rated it as a five-star car when it was tested in 2021.

All versions get Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assistance, blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert to aid you when reversing into traffic. Adding option packs gives you more features, so the Innovation pack brings lane-change assist and a more sophisticated AEB system.

Other safety technology on the GV70 includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control is standard on Luxury Line models
  • Blindspot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert, warns drivers  if another vehicle is approaching when reversing out of a space
  • Adaptive front lighting – capable of adjusting the light beam to give better visibility through corners and when coming up to junctions
  • Post-collision braking, where the brakes are automatically applied after an impact
