Should you buy one?

It’s surprisingly tempting, but tough to recommend on rational grounds, and it is the most convincing Genesis yet, despite the lack of any hybrid versions. It’s a very good deal compared with the premium opposition, and add in the bulletproof warranty and servicing package, and it could be a very interesting left-field choice.

The standard equipment list is huge and the optional technology sometimes far outstrips what the likes of BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz can offer in this segment. It’s refined, smooth and comfortable and comes with a properly show-stopping, well made and (mostly) user-friendly interior.

The GV70 isn’t just a car for people that want to be different for the sake of it. Yes, it’s not as good to drive as a BMW X3 or Porsche Macan, but it’s far less dull than an Audi Q5, manages to be better built and techier inside than a Mercedes-Benz GLC and feels far less brittle than a Volvo XC60.

What we like

The interior is gorgeously trimmed and the tech is simple to use. The Genesis warranty and care package is industry leading, and it should be a painless and pleasurable ownership experience.

What we don’t like

The engine range makes no sense in the current market – both might be reasonable performers, but the petrol is heavy on fuel and costly to tax, while the diesel doesn’t have enough punch to trade with the best of the opposition.
