Should you buy one?

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is an impressive electric car – and the toughest competition for the BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3 that we can remember. Why? Because it brings the Koreans’ considerable battery prowess to the mid-sized EV saloon market, wrapped up in a desirable package with head-turning style.

The Ioniq 6 is more spacious than both, although the Tesla is cheaper and has an even longer range, while the BMW is the driver’s choice.

What we like

We approve that every version of the Ioniq 6 available in the UK should be able to drive some 300 miles, given fair use, on one charge. That’s a seriously decent range, and even given hard use in cold conditions we’d expect to see comfortably over 250 miles in between charges.

This stuff is so important for electric car users. The e-hardware underpinning the Ioniq 6 is class-leading – with rapid charging available and V2L tech meaning that you can charge up household items, other EVs and even your home from your car. It’s seriously clever tech and this energy management will become increasingly important in the decade ahead as society becomes more switched on.

What we don’t like

Downsides? The decision to fit only the larger 77kWh battery pack – and to deny Brits the chance to buy smaller-celled versions available elsewhere in the world – means that prices are still quite steep. The dream of cheaper electric cars appears to be a way off yet…

If you can afford the prices, there’s little to discourage you from buying a Hyundai Ioniq 6. If you like the style, that could prove somewhat Marmitey to different tastes, then we’d wholeheartedly recommend this EV.
